I posted a related message about this down a little ways. After another night of fishing on Greenlake I am more befuddled than before. I picked up a smorgasbord of chironomids (both pupa and larva stage). I can't figure out what these fish are rising to eat at around 8:15. I am nearly positive it is some sort of midge because they are just barely breaking the surface when they are eating and I am seeing the gnat and mosquito like bugs flying around. I don't know if I am just not fishign these right or what. Before the fish start to rise I am fishing with the approriate leader/tippet length. But, it doesn't appear that the flies are sinking much if at all. Is it appropriate to use a weight in this scenario? When the fish begin to rise I am using various pupa and nothing. I know there are a lot of fish in here and they are catchable on fly. Any suggestions about time of day, what to use, where to go, etc?

Thanks

i beleive green lake has a lot of carp in it and that may be what you are seeing and why you are not getting hitys. try a few kennals of corn with no weight. carp can be cooked but not by me . The truth is they run and fight like nothing you have ever seen. tom

I have not fished Green Lake, but I have fished a lot of other lakes around her eat this time of year. If you tie flies, I would try capturing a natural, and tying a LaFontaine Halo Emeger in the appropriate size and color. Even hatchery fish can be very selective on the chironomids.
