I just started hunting last year. Bought a brand new Tikka T-3 in 7mm/08 with a Burris Fullfield scope. So far I have managed to get two deer and I missed a shot on a nice bear. Maybe next time.

i am new to hunting and hope to get out this year for my first time. I heard that those Tikkas are all around rifles for everything from coyotes to moose. I looked at it but couldnt make myself comitso i picked up a used savage custom in 8mm-06 with a nice tasco 5-16 power scope. This rifle is sweet even has a killer HS Precision stock on it. I wouldnt want to be a thing when this gun goes off

Sweet den. I pretty much would have to buy another house to get away with that many mounts. Not sure my wife would even allow one. Funny thing is...it was all my house before I got married!

Didn't that cougar come from Montana? I think I remember that pic. Had one or more eat part of a deer I shot near the same area in SW MT? Hell of a trophy room. Your taxidermist owes ya a couple free ones :-)

Funny,
I learned to be humble long ago.
I have friends that put me completley to shame in the hunting and fishing department.
When ever you get up on that high horse someone will come along and knock your head off.
It doesn't matter what you are into, more than likley there is at least one (MANY) person out there that can run circles around your best effort.

Salmonella, AMEN! Also there is someone always bigger and badder out there, or smaller and way meaner. I have met many who are better outdoorspeople and many who I would not want mad at me. Anyway, I have a few questions. Have you ever done a Buffalo hunt? Who are some good guides for caribou and moose? Or do you do all the hunting yourself.

Thanx Jim,
I do most all of my hunts myself.
The Grizz & Kodiak were guided as by Alaskan law.
The Alaskan caribou were self-guided, as were most all of my trophies.
There is so much more satisfaction to doing it yourself rather than just being a "trigger man" on a guided hunt.
That satisfaction is taken to the next level when you do it with archery gear.
I have a bunch of deer racks out in the garage, deer are my bread & butter animal, I think I'm over fifty now.
Many people may look at my den and say..."Just another rich guy".
Nothing could be farther from the truth.
I've been nothing more than an average middle class income earner my whole life.
Yes, those bear hunts were expensive.
I made huge sacrafices to be able to go on those hunts.
I learned at an early age that damn few things are impossible, IF you set your mind to it AND are willing to do the work neccessary to acheive those dreams.
Most people are lazy and want instant gratification.

I'd like to take a Buffalo with my bow. actually most Buffalo "hunts" are like shooting cattle, but they are really good in the freezer!

On the moose & caribou, there are a bunch of really good guides for both species, both in Alaska & Canada.
Guided hunts have gotten incredibly expensive!
You can do those hunts on your own fairly easily in Alaska.

If you were just starting your search for a guide, I'd start by going to the big hunting conventions, The Safari Club's huge convention in Reno is truly unbelievable!
The largest gathering of hunting guides & outfitters on the planet!
The ISE show's aren't too bad either.
You can also use the services of a well respected booking agent to find a guide.
Take Care,
Salmonella

There is a pretty good book on self guided moose hunting in AK via a raft. I'll look it up at home tonight and post the name of book and author. It's a good place to start and will really wet your apetite to go to AK.

I was actually told that moose and brown bears are required to have guides in AK. That is good to know that I can do most myself. I checked the regs and see that only brown bear, Dall sheep, and goats require a guide. I am hoping to heal enough that within the next two years I can take a trip to AK or Canada for caribou and moose. I have checked out many resourses for self guided hunts in AK. There is an Indian rez in the midwest that has buffalo "meat" hunts for around $500 bucks. The animals are 2-3 years old. Trophy hunts are around 2500 or so. I think 500-600 pounds of buffalo for about a buck a pound is a good deal. I will have to find the rez again and post it. One of the best meals I ever ate was buffalo T-bone over the campfire. Didn't even need salt or pepper.

The book is called Hunt Alaska Now by Dennis W. Confer.
"Self Guiding for trophy moose and caribou".
It's been seven years since I read it but I remember enjoying it at the time.

I did an "outfitted" caribou hunt in 2000. We used Lake Clark Air and hunted the Mulchatna Herd.
It was a fantastic hunt. They dropped us out on the tundra N. of Lk Iliamna for 6 days and nights with all the food/tent/cooking stuff/cots/lanterns etc. We just needed our personal gear. It was a lot of fun and the two of us shot 4 nice bou and a lot of ptarmigan. We also caught a lot of greyling and trout. It's a little spooky with the brown bears out there but that just adds to the adventure. I will bring my son on that hunt when he's old enough.
