Got my email tonight.
My son drew one of the best elk tags in the state, unit 17 youth early muzzleloader!
One of only 25 tags!

Woo Hoo!
Gonna be a busy fall, I'm lovin it!

Final results should be available on the New Mexico website at 11 oclock.
Good luck guys!

Right on!...

After spending 26 days in NM (Jicarilla/Valles Calderra) chasing lightning fires, and seeing more redonkulous elk/sheds than I'd ever imagined... I'm surprised I haven't moved down there yet.

Amazing critters down there...

Really wish I had the $$ to apply (yes, apply, not hunt...) so I too, shall live vicariously through you/your son.

No kidding!! Unit 17 has some TROPHIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait to see the results! If you need any help with the smokepoles I hunted with them for 12 years and have them dialed!

If Thomas wants to use my .50 cal Knight Bighorn stainless thumbhole stock, he's welcome to it. 150 Grains 777 with 295 grain powerbelt and it's punching a 2.5" group at 100 yards. I've sent deer into cartwheels with this load!

Can he use jacketed bullets with this hunt?

Thanks Keith!
We are complete Newbies to Muzzleloading.
I won a .50 cal Knight KRB7 stainless at a RMEF banquet last year.
I'm just now setting it up.
New Mexico is very liberal with the ML rules.
Saboted copper bullets & scopes are allowed .
I think I'll pop a Leupold off of one of my older rifles , I know it removes the theory of "primitive Weapons" but I want to find the kid a big bull and give him the best chance to kill it.
I like the idea of 777 pellets for simplicity.
I was looking at 250 gr Barnes boattail bullets as well.

I have a few local connections in New Mexico that may really pay off.
Lots of hard work ahead, but there are certainly some TOADS that have been taken in the unit like this one from last year that keep my mind reeling...

Well if you need any help with the muzzleloader stuff, feel free to call. 360-606-2195

One thing to keep in my is those speed loader you buy and preload kind of suck, especially in the moment of a big bull right in front of you.... What I did was I took a shotgun shell holder and slid it over the stock of my gun with the shell holder to the outside of my face... I had 5 pre-loads set up there. I had bought some solid rubber tubing and cut them down to about 4", the rubber tubing was just large enough around to squeeze a bullet into the bottom and I had caps that fit the top. The 4 inch tubes were just long enough to hold 3 - 777 150 grain pellets and my bullet. That way when I needed a quick follow up shot I wasn't digging through pockets with shaky hands trying to get another load down the barrel. It makes things much easier. I'll have to take some pictures of how I have it set up, it's smooth as a whistle...

If you don't want to go through the extra effort of that, I'd order this speed loader system It makes life a lot easier.....

209 primers are OK.

Again, a big thanks Keith.
I am gathering my parts & pieces still.
I'll let you know how the thing shoots when it's all together.
