Just curious what frame packs you guys use. I'm going to be buying a new one soon. I'm looking at the cabelas guide model. Anyone have this? likes dislikes? I want something that can carry all my gear and drop the pack to be used just as a frame to haul elk.
thanks

Hey glowball, Yes, those Cabela's Guide Series frame packs are real nice. I have one and have packed elk meat on them. Very comfy. They distribute the weight quite well. I found it easier to use bungee cords instead of lashing with string/cord once you have removed the pack portion from the frame. I have also come acrossed a pack frame by the name of "Bull Packs." These are the cat's meow as far as the structural integraty of the frame itself. However, the suspension system (straps-n-such) seem kindof cheezy. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I seen those bull pacs at the sportsmans show and they were sweet. Cant see giving $170 for just a frame though.

I use a "Dwight Schu" model from Cabelas. Its an all-right pack over all. The frame is a nylon standard Coleman Peak 1 frame. The bag is real nice, roomy , water proof, and fleece on the outside so its real quiet. Bag removes easily, and comes with attachable/detachable fanny pack. Its made light and comfortable so you an hunt while wearing it. I've had some pretty heavy quarters on it, and it packs pretty well. Very comfortable. For strictly heavy packing I think the Cabelas packer with the shelf may be better. Depends on what you want. Some guys still prefer a Trapper Nelson board just for getting a load "up the hill", but I wouldn't want to backpack hunt with one of those or a "Bull Pack".
