I am considering enrolling in the AHE class. How difficult is this class? Have you guys ever been asked to do a damage hunt? and how good are the special permit AHE tag hunts?

My humble opinion re: Oregon AHE (Advanced Hunter Education). I think it is a great idea.

I don't think the AHE hunts amount to much. There should be better rewards for AHE hunters.

In Oregon, you must register for damage hunts in one county only. They don't call you.

It's worth taking the class, it's not hard.

I'm also interested in the AHE program. Could you email that info my way also?

Look through the hunting regs at the special hunt permits. There's a section for AHE hunts. None of them were in areas I wish to hunt or interested me. I suppose the extra hunter's ed can be a good thing by itself regardless of extra hunt opportunities.

I've taken 5 elk through the AHE program, and my season this year doesn't end until 2-28-06. I have been in it for about 8 years now, and I really enjoy it. I have worked on a number of projects involving nest boxes, streamside reforestation, elk collaring (radio transmitters), and most recently opening up access on the Wynoochee River for bank fishermen. I also could hunt Saturday on private property on the Columbia River for Geese if I didn't have to help put on the Ducks Unlimited Banquet in Aberdeen that day.

You either take, or give something back. The hunts are a bit of a bonus for giving something back, and I have made the best of some challenging hunts, and also met a number of very good friends in the process.

The volunteer hours are a snap for me because I volunteer about 20 hours each year raising funds for DU, plus the other projects I get involved in.

I agree with dogfish, Its a little committment since ya have to do some communty service, but I also have been drawn 3 times for special elk tags since doing AHE 10 years ago.

The test isn't too difficult. It's not a "Hunter Safety" test. It's really more about hunter eduaction, field etiquette and image. I think that they assume you're already safe.

If you send in for the packet, they send you a big pile of info to read thru. I read thru everything 3 times and then took the test and passed pretty easily. But it really was a surprisingly big pile of stuff they send you. Each read-thru the pile probably took me 6-7 hours.

The test is not hard, if you look at it from a students perspective. If you go in thinking that you have 20 od years hunting under your belt you will be taken back a bit.

I took the test with my Grandfather and Father. WE all passed. I have two other buddies that have failed it twice. Take the time to study.

I just took the test today. I would say it's challenging, but not too hard if you take the time to read over the material several times, use the test review and know the information listed in the curriculum. Of course I don't know if I passed yet, but will know in a week or so. Aside from the above advice I recommend being familiar with the hunting regs, wildlife in Washington and spend extra time reviewing all booklets produced specifically by the Dept of Fish & Wildlife.

I am taking my test tommorrow. Is it all multiple choice? Are there pictures that you need to name the animals? Did you really need to watch the video? Pretty much what is on the test?
