I tied off some practically bomb-proof (LOTS of head cement)chum flies for a conservation auction recently (Shewey's Comet, Dog Salmon Spey, Chum Candy #2, and chartreuse-chenille/beadhead/green hackle/fuschia marabou tail on salt-water hook in size 6...) and was recently told that candlefish (in chartreuse/green?) would also work. I was just wondering what other patterns in what sizes would be effective that I could also include? Are there specific patterns that aggravate/appeal to chum depending on if they are in saltwater or in freshwater? I have read that if chartreuse does not work that bright red and hot pink may do the job. Any suggestions would be most welcome!!!

Thanks much!

Osprey, is that a serious question about my user name or a slam?

No, I don't go by "Loon" anywhere, at least not by choice!

Flygirl,

I have had good luck with shrimp patterns, in size 2 or 4 or smaller in clear conditions. Sometimes I tie the shrimp patterns with a green butt(like the green butted skunk). This is in rivers. In the salt or mouths of rivers, I have used small baitfish flies(blue flashaboo, and glow) Tied on 1 or 1/0. size dependent on clarity

I do pretty well with chartreuse cactus chenille, just tie it from the back of the hook forward then add a small wing on top in the same color. this also works well in pink, I really haven't bothered tying many different flies for chum since this seems to work when I'm fly fishing for them. By the way size six on the hook and I weight it with ten to fifhteen wraps of .025 lead. Good luck Fiveweight.
