I was thinking about jig heads and was wondering about balance. I have been using a center balance bullet jighead .Most jigs are tied on a standard balance round head.A few are made with a round head tied head in front of the eye making it a center balance .Does it make a differance? Why would there be any differance between a round head or a bullet head? Where is the best place to buy GOOD colors of material, mainly marabou?Just some thoughts, thanks guys

You can pick up marabou at any fly shop. For bright yarns and chenille(spelling?), try a fabric shop first. You can pick up large quantities for cheap. As for jig heads, I don't know. I usually run weighted flies or flies with split shot....among other things.---mike

I use flies like a jig sometimes too. Mostly because I don't trust the jig heads that I've seen in the stores. Either they are designed for walleye and the hook is so flimsy that I'm afraid it'll straighten out, or the hook is stout but is so short that the eyelet blocks off a lot of the hook gap. Now I'm looking for big bead heads to put behind the eye of fly hooks so it will in effect be a jig with a forward facing eye. Haven't found any 1/8 - 1/4 oz beads yet that will work.

I make jigs right on the spot using Aeroflys. Cut off all foam, trim back tube so as not to cut wraps holding it together and slide it down your leader. Add a splitshot, your choice of sizes depending on water...Thats the beauty, you can vary sizes and weight depending on your situation. I know that Aeroflys are kinda spendy but you may be able to get them in Bulk. And there still cheaper than a bought steelie fly from a shop or even cheaper than a jig bought retail usually.

If you want an excellent jighead contact Rainbow Jigs at rainbowjigs@aol.com. They have 5 sizes from 1/32nd to 3/8. The 1/8th, 1/4 and 3/8's have long shank heavy wire hooks designed for steelhead and salmon. I use them for fishing pink worms.
