I've heard and read that so many cures/methods out there are the absolute best available...

Has there ever been any proof to these claims, or is it purely speculative to personal preference??

Are cured skeins better than mature loose eggs tied in a sac, if so why?? Why does everyone seem to choose red?

I've caught salmon and metalheads on all egg types/cures/colors and methods, but have yet to compare any technique side by side because I don't fish all that often and use what is available at the time.

I'm not trying to divulge any guide secrets here...just trying to learn from everybody's input.

Put the Amerman's in the slot, and it's BOBBER DOWN!

Went out this morning to find rising water coloring up fast, but the Amerman eggs saved the day once again. My reel was really giving me fits @#$%^&** where only one of 20 casts ( I think I'm actually being generous) could be launched without a backlash. When I was finally able to put one in the sweet slot.... kerplunge.... fish on baby! This bronze hen just couldn't resist:

Back she goes:

3 parts borax, 2 parts sugar, 1 part salt...Add your choice of color and you'll be a happy camper. You can buy a little bottle of commercial cure for 7 dollars, or spend 7 dollars on the ingredients for the above cure, and it will last you 5-times as long. Plus the eggs look so much more natural. Try it, it's money!

Here's a few more C&R kings from two days ago that also took a liking to Amerman's cure. I can almost hear those kings saying:

Hi, I'm Oncorhyncus tschawytscha.... and I approve this cure!

Ammermans isn't a bad cure but it defiantely shines for fall chinook. I like to have a bunch of cures for different situations. Steelies, you can't go wrong with borax surgar salt combo, samon depends what species and where. Also what method you are using.

Sounds like a cure I should try. Can you give us a run-down on how you use the cure? (ie: Add cure then refrigerate? Leave out in room temp?)

Also, you mention adding color. What do you use for the coloring? (I could guess jello powder..but then...

TIA!

Does anyone know where FNP lives???
I am thinking about selling my busines so that I can stalk him on a full time bassis. On the days he goes to work I could do lawn jobs or pick up cig buts in parking lots to make enough money to send home some mac and cheese for my kids....
Doc if you ever need a camp cook let me know!!!

I just use whatever my daughter cures up for me. Here she is checking out her latest batch of cure. Actually, I think she's trying to lick and/or eat the cure. Silly girl, cured eggs are for fish!

Whatever you use as a cure...

This is a great start. These are fresh from a hatchery hen...veins carefully removed.
