Tug, I knew John Clayton when he ran Clark Creek hatchery on the Skagit. I remember him buying a regular home water heater and using it to adjust water temperatures in individual incubation trays so that eggs taken at different times would hatch and emerge at the same time so that they could all be ponded together, same time, same size. The spring Chinook program at Skagit was never successful until John applied what seem to be the same techniques he did at Kalama. He was a cool guy.
