Best story I heard about fishermen and SRKWs was about the tie when a guy was fighting a nice Chinook and the whale took it. He was asked if he was mad about losing the fish to the whale. The response was along the lines of "Have you ever had a whale on your line?".

I know that at least in AK some of the Killers take fish off of the longlines as they are retrieved. The whales listen for the gear being worked and then go get the particular species they want. The Killers, and other species too, have learned which boats waste what species and go get the easy food. One they ain't is dumb.

Putting more hatchery Chinook out for them is a nice, but rather silly, idea. They go after adult salmon, and they need food 365 days a year. We need to significantly increase the pink, chum, coho, sockeye, and even steelhead returns for those times when adult Chinook aren't around. That is, if we really want to recover the whales.
