i grew up in arizona and there are tons of scorpions down there, and they only come out in the heat of the day. in the wintertime at night it can or get close to freezing and you wont ever see them out then...

also, it shows the author as: Ebenezer F. Porter II Capt. USN-RET doesnt that stand for USNavy Retired?? if he is retired, then what is he doing in afghanistan??
