Just a guess, but I don't think there is a big body of knowledge out there for nailing the chums in the salt. However, like you've heard, there are several techniques out there that apparently work (which I have not had an opportunity to try). I can confirm the cerise jig under a float works great in the rivers. Another technique I've read about is to troll a small plug herring right on the surface very very slowing and a long distance behind the boat. Like youself, I hope try both of these techniques out plus try the herring under a float approach in the next couple of weeks.
