I'm not exactly positive on the name of the Applegate report. I was a teenager the last time I read it. It is about 150 pages that sort of provided a snapshot of the people of the central Oregon region in the mid 1800's. For some reason I thought it was a commisioned report, in my family it has always been known as the Applegate Report, and it was evidence that the people warred with each other, the settlers and the traders to a point, but also that the natives were pretty much westrernized by the French trappers, the English explorers as well as Hudson's Bay people and the Spanish explorer's. They were already dressed in victorian garb and educated in the Bible by the time that the Applegates arrived. This isn't really what the government wanted to be heard as they were attempting to justify the action of taking over the willamette valley for western settlers to farm.
