Here's my interpretation. Hang loose is only pinky finger & thumb. Devil horns used by Beavis & Butthead at a Metallica concert is only pinky finger & index finger. So I guess the real meaning is the sign language for I love you, unless you're in the Bloods or Crips. Then keep your head down or be prepared to shoot back.
