The water out there can get BIG very quickly. People do it all the time though. Watch the tides and weather. Some people in small boats feel safer at the slag pile but, big boat traffic can cause some choppy water that could stern swamp a small boat if you don't pay attention. I wouldn't do it in a 12 footer.
