Most of the commercial fishing industry in the NW is a financial joke anyway. They get pennies on the investment we(as taxpayers) make to put the fish in the system(salmon), especially compared to the return to local communities from sportsfishing. The US has a $7 billion trade deficit in seafood alone. We need to get moving in the direction of openwater aquaculture. I for one and happy that we are starting to move in that direction. There are many examples of good quality, low impact ocean ranching, (not salmon pens) such as the Japanese scallop industry. We can use the food, the jobs, and the $$ in our communities. Either that or we can stick with the short term thinking that has gotten us into this mess(salmon, timber??). I know this can be a hot topic, but a little knowledge goes a long way.
