Figure out where the steelhead are, concentrate on being patient and persistant through a hole. Take mulitiple passes. If you don't hit a head on the first pass, row back up and try again. It's really not necessary to worry about how much mono you have below your braided line. Just work the hole hard, and keep at it. I wouldn't worry too much about a steelie being line-shy, I'd worry more about fishing a hole properly
