For what it's worth, I'm a big fan of Cooks Illustrated (sort of popular mechanics for cooking) and they did a fairly exhaustive review of the various knife sharpening options. In the end they recommended the Chefs Choice Edge Select (electric) among other things.

Clearly a few passes with a butcher steel is extremely useful as well.
