Depending on which level of Goverment you work in, it is a pretty secure place to be. Salaries are not the largest, but the benefits are solid, especially when compared to the private sector. No matter what happens to the economy there has to be some level of government services. Pick a job in a field that is essential, like public safety.

I know what you are hinting at Slab, but at least at the local level I don't see any growing in Goverment right now. However, there is a whole bunch of us baby boomer types that have our time in and will be heading out the door in the next few years. The plus side is that will provide opportunity for many young people who are willing to do public service.
