I worked as a professional mechanic for many years (back when ASE was NIASE) and was certified in all areas. I have never paid for a brake job, rotor turn, or brake drum turn. I can tell you that unless your brakes are pulsating or making a gawd awful noise, it is not likely that you need either a drum turn or rotor turn. If you are told you need such....make them prove it. There are specifications, make them use them.

There are caliper rebuilds available that come with the pads. They can be purchased very reasonably and put on by an independent, if you are not comfortable with it.

Like most things in today's world.....your fears are another man's money.

I used to voluntarily "supervise" owners who were willing to do the work. I worked for them under two conditions. They kept the coffee coming and I didn't get my hands dirty. I did it to educate the average owner. The conclusion I came to was that there were very few folks interested if they had to do the work. I found that interesting, since I have always been a "I can do that" type. To each his own. If you find a good, honest shop/mechanic....best treat 'em right, I'd think.
