Truth be told, I will not be fishing for steelheads but will be using the rod on the Gulf Coast for redfish(red drum) in tournament settings. These tournaments often require a rod that will allow a long cast and yet offer good sensitivity. Your suggestions are appreicated. Thanks.

Guys, he needs a medium to heavy power with a light to medium tip. 6 to 20 # dependent on whee he is. I love reds!
Dude, I love redfish! For a first rod find something in a 8 to 15 # range. Look at Berkley rods in a 8 -9 foot range. You should get a spinning version for having a wide range of options. There are more specialized rods, but a good Berkley will be a good start. I have many rods, from Loomis through Lami, through Raven, and Berkley, but I would start w the Berkeley give what you list as boundaries.

And loosen the drag and rinse the whole set up after every trip out, rinse off the salt water, these rigs are not salt water ready.
