Very important for fishing whole herring and getting that big ol slow chinook roll which is so often the ticket when plug cuts aren't getting it done. Even more critical in cold water.
The key to good slip ties is to make them VERY tight so they are tough to get to slip. You want the fish to have already hooked itself by the time it slides. #30 dacron and pliers are good tool to get a tight top hook.
