I don't mean to hijack this thread, but it's an interesting pic from Parker. I normally cut my herring at an angle so it rolls on its axis. However, the pic shows the herring cut perpendicular to the body, that is, there is no angle. Maybe it's just the way the pic was taken. However, if it was cut perpendicular, I'm curious what type of roll it has when it's cut in this manner. Presumably it catches fish just fine. (I might have concerns about Parker's contributions to this BB, but I've never doubted his ability to catch fish.)

Back to the question - I always tie my rigs solid, no slip. I use the width of three fingers (index, middle, ring) as a general guide to the distance between the hooks. I might vary the distance slightly depending on the size of the herring.
