It's the extremists on both sides that provide fodder for the media. Centrists who try to solve problems of national interest don't provide the kind of media entertainment that bumps ratings and sells advertising. And since this is 'Merica, it's all about ratings and advertising sales. Discussing and solving the central issues is painful news to the public, so they don't respond positively to it, so the media covers what the public does respond to, which is the entertainment value provided by the R and D extremes.


+too-much-to-quantify. Salmo nailed it. Most Ds and Rs I know can have (relatively) intelligent discussions about issues without little flecks of partisan foam shooting out of their mouths...but that isn't good TV. Extremists get the headlines while the rest of us talk like rational adults. And as Ike points out, no matter how solid his ideas are and how articulate he comes across (he killed it on SNL after the storm), Governor Christie's weight will be a MAJOR issue next election. They'll say he lacks the "cuteness factor" or "doesn't resonate with female voters" because he's built like Rush Limbaugh.
