FACT: Commercial gillnet boats rigged to catch Sockeye salmon during the summer of 1997 "accidentally" killed at least 35,000 Chinook salmon. That's more than the total number of chinook to survive the trip back to Puget Sound rivers to spawn the next summer. A few months later the National Marine Fisheries Service listed Chinook as a species threatened with extinction.
