At the Fall Creek Hatchery on the Alsea River in Oregon they killed about 4000 Cohos last fall. There reasoning why, They are hatchery fish and they are competing with the wild spawners. Well here is the funny part.... Fall creek has waterfall about 1 mile from the mouth. There were no salmon or stealhead above that point until there was a fish ladder installed. The hatchery was built above the falls.
Some people video taped the killing and have filed a lawsuit to stop the killing. Coho were considered for listing on the endangered species list here in Oregon. It maes absolutly no sense to kill a fish that that is supposed to be "endangered". The coho stock that the hatchry raised were orginally Alsea river stock.
Thats just an example of how screwed up our goverment is. The N.M.F.S. were the ones who told the state of Oregon to kill those fish. They were the ones who made the decision to list the coho.........
Smells fishy to me...........................
