Chris,

You might be better served by doing the latter, that is, getting a guide to teach you the ropes. Sure, you can catch fish in large numbers, and have a great time at a lodge, but ( I hope I'm not stomping on your toes now, Bob) by hiring someone to teach you the ins and outs of rowing and fishing, you'll be ready to get serious this fall and winter. Being observant while being guided is one of the best ways to learn to become a successful angler.

If you end up going to AK, I'm sure (relatively) you won't be disappointed as long as you get well outside of Anchorage. But think how much use you'd get out of being able to navigate your local streams without fearing for your life. My vote goes to hiring a guide on a river you intend to fish frequently.

Good luck with your decision.
