if everyone was armed one would think twice before pulling their gun....
That's EXACTLY my point. It's because cops know lots of people are packing that they approach even routine traffic stops on a hair trigger. Counter-violence like what we saw in Dallas only makes the situation that much worse.
Do you hardcores out there REALLY think the solution is to give every man, woman, and child a firearm? That's the kind of fear you want your children living in?
Our right to bear arms is important, but I don't believe our forefathers intended us all to carry them around everywhere we go. If the reason the Second Amendment was included in the Constitution ever comes to fruition, we'll have plenty of time to unlock our gun safes and break out the arsenal before the tyrants come calling.
The cops have a hair trigger because so many have been shot and killed in the last couple of years , 28 this year.
And just what do you suppose their killers used to put those cops in a shot and killed state?
Guns are supposed to give cops a clear, threatening advantage over citizens behaving badly. That advantage is KEY to them doing their everyday job. Knowing that an ever-increasing number of citizens are carrying (some legal, some not, some good, some bad) proboably doesn't do much to keep them calm and confident, and I dare say it might even put some on a hair trigger.
Quite honestly, I think watching innocent (or at least not antagonistic) people get shot by cops while apparently reaching for a gun provides a solid incentive NOT to carry one. Cops who don't feel threatened (a lot like you and I) tend to be more "reasonable."
