I've been painting my own plugs now for several years now and I dip'em. solid colors seem to work just fine. I've had real good luck painting them that way.
Also I've seen plugs painted all different styles. green head, red back ,blues sides etc. keep in mind when you hold your plug up in front of you, like from the fishes point of view, what do you see? All the eyes and stripes and doodads the fish usually can't see. Look at the ones painted at the factory almost all are painted a solid color from the fishes point of view.

Just a thought and maybe something to keep in mind.
