If one were to believe the reports out now, the weapons (appears to be a shotgun and a .38 pistol) belonged to his father.

Unless they find his father dead and with his finger cut off (biometric lock on the safe to open it), I can't come up with any logical reason as to how this kid would have access to these guns.

I always love how the parents never get blamed for their snowflakes actions during a mass shooting.

Unless you can prove you did everything in your power to secure your firearms, I say parents should be tried as an accessory to mass murder in an event like this.
