Well, I guess I could say now that my patience percervered finally! I caught my very first steelhead today(guessed to be 12 lbs from a nearby sesoned fly angler and wild fish -carefully released ) and what suprised me was I actually caught it on a fly! smile I was about to throw in the towel on fly fishing for steelhead. Many people have told me I was wasting my time.... I was beginning to beleive them...I guess I can say it works now. what
I think I might be hooked! Never give up!!! The main reason I caught this fish on my fly rod is it's the only steelhead gear$ set-up I have! <img border="0" alt="[Goldfish]" title="" src="graemlins/goldfish.gif" />
Darin

-I guess my name on this forum reflects my patience! wink I've been Steelheading off-and-on since I was in highschool in the late 80's!

Yes, #1 can take awhile ... but once you get used to the idea (most rivers) of fishing slow and deep ... they'll start "hooking up" with regularity. Not as often as with drift gear, but a heck of a lot more satisfing.

Fred,

I'll keep dredging at it! Thanks. When I first hooked it, I thought...I must have caught a branch, no a rock, no it's headshaking -maybe a dolly, a whitefish, no to big for that...-0h I can see it now, must be an old salmon about to die....no can't be it's February...wait a minute it might be a steelhead! -It took me a while to believe. He was a fresh and bright metallic buck with a hue of pink at his gill cover -beautiful! He gave a good 15 minute or so fight. I felt like I was battling a king salmon -he wanted to go deep. Richard a neighboring nearby season fly angler helped coach me in.

Good Fishing, Darin

It's kinda funny the thought process your brain goes through when you hook a winter steelhead on a fly..

First you think "i'm snagged"
second you think "oh it's a stick"
third you think" damn just a dolly"
not for a few minutes does your brain realized that you have just accomplished what you set out to do to begin with:) Then you are elated:)
