For those of you who receive Fish & Fly magazine, you may have seen this article in the winter 2002 edition.

A guy hooked a 18 foot White shark off the coast of the Chatham Islands, just east of New Zealand, with a Custom Designed Seal-Meat-Chum fly pattern featuring a 130 LB shock wire tippet. The pattern was about 12 inches long.

He had been gearing up for this adventure for about two years and had a custom Jim Grandt one-piece rod designed to fight White sharks.

In his story he finally caught one and fought it for close to 30 minutes before the shark spit the fly. Pretty amazing.

What is next?? a Humback Whale on a krill pattern?

Incredible! I'd hate to be the one who has to remove the hook & release the great white.... Guess they didn't have to worry about that!

Too cool ... I've had a lifelong dream of great white fishing ... and to now know I could do it on a fly! Hmm, time to rethink things a little ...

Saw that blub on the GWS. Pretty intense. Down in San Diego there is a guide(Conway Bowman) that fishes Makos on the fly. I fished with him last year and got two Makos using a 6 inch chum fly of sorts. I am booked with him again for mid summer and hope to get into them again. He uses a release gaff and I was able to re-use my fly. We had 5 sharks for the boat that day. He fishes out of a center console 18 Ft Parker. Really fun.

I'm working on a Sea Lion pattern right now. It'll be a little tough to cast, but I figure a 30 weight with a fast taper out ot do the trick. Anyone know of a good steel fly line that will throw a good loop???
