Good luck on the scatter gun acquisition. A good upload bird gun may be hard to find these days...let alone the ammo!

You don't strike me as a die-hard upland birder, so may not be a good idea to dump a couple grand on a good over/under 20 ga (or 12) for a single hunt.

You hunting on the west side, or east side? Dakotas?

You hunting with pointers, flush/retrievers, or just walking dog-less?

Hard to beat the Remington 870 Wingmaster Magnum for an all-around scatter gun that will cover everything from big waterfowl to the little upland birds as well as whatever one can do with it in their home. Lots of mods if you want to destroy it in the future and gak it all out with furniture and accessories.....like I did to my Dad's old 870.

If you were a big time birder, I'd invest in an over under 20. 12's will get too heavy in the field and not needed for most good hunters over dogs.

I'd also get an over/under professionally fit, as they are not all the same on the shoulder.

Many a pheasant died in my past life between my trusty 870 and my grandmother's Model 12 20 ga. Damn golden retriever was good at finding/flushing birds...but never did the retrieving part well.

we are going to Miller Ranch over in Sprague if the state doesnt burn to the ground... my friend came home from Spokane last night and it took him over 11 hours or some sh!t...

hes got a few Citori's, which i can use, but id rather just get my own...

Sportsmans has quite a few shotguns around still actually, im kinda leaning towards a semi auto, but i honestly have wanted a O/U for a long time, ive shot Citori's and SKB's but they are way out of what i want to spend...

no, im not a huge bird hunter, but, i completed the safety course last week so im going to hunt now... i do love shooting trap however as well...

kinda been looking at this one

https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting-gear...-28in/p/1440860

and maybe this one, as Stoeger is owned by Berretta...

https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting-gear...hotgun/p/p42443

for semi auto's, ive been lookin at the Stoeger M3000's, the Weatherby Element, Winchester SX4, and the Tri Star Raptor..

theres a few others too, like Franchi's and a couple others as well..

might end up just using the Citori and buy one later on, but id like to get a good trap/hunting shotgun in either semi auto or O/U..

he has 2 dogs, both GSP's....

Why not get a 28" Modified barrel or a 28" barrel with chokes ?
That way you can see if you like hunting Wild Chicken and Chukar without too much expenditure.

Order a barrel on line and have it in a few days.
Make sure you get one with a vent rib.

Hunting birds in October on the East Side is one of the best ways to spend a day.
There was a lot of Chukar and Huns in the Deschutes Canyon a couple of weeks ago.
Betcha it's going to be a good season.

I absolutely *hated* my Citori. It wasn't fit properly and never bothered to get it fitted before I sold it.

My advice would be to have it fitted if you get one. That's way too much of a shotgun not too....in hindsight.

I would always over-shoot with the top barrel, visually see/correct where I was shooting and hit the bird with the bottom barrel.

Every damn time.

OTOH, I'm Dead Eye Paker with my 870.

But hey, since it's not my money, get this one:

Browning Citori CXS Over and Under, 20ga, 28". Only $2,000 ish.

That's some 'spensive pheasant(s).

rofl

Note: I honestly do not know what I'd buy if I needed a good, light, over/under upland bird gun today. I'd probably be stupid and by some Ferrari-equivalent Italian scatter gun blessed by the Pope himself....and I'd still miss my first damn shot!!!!!

Yep, proper fitment is so important with a shotgun.
Close your eyes and mount the gun.
Open your eyes and you should see a nice sight plane if the gun fits you.

I like 870/1100
I have a couple of 1100 TRAP models
Love the high comb

DD..at the rate Central WA is burning up, ALL the birds might be in the Deschutes Canyon in a few days! wink

EVO-good info from both DD and EL-Parker. I wasn't going to comment, as you normally just argue against someones good advice until they quit trying to help you. But, here it goes...from someone who has shot a couple hundred thousand rounds of trap shells; if you're seriously interested in a "decent" shotgun for birds and recretaional clay bird shooting, borrow the Citori for the first hunt or get a 26-28" vent rib barrel with choke tubes for the mossberg for now. Both options should provide you with no excuses for equipment failure at Miller Ranch. I've never paid for hunting (except for my own leases), but I've hunted near their perimeter and it's great habitat.

Then look for a 3"-12ga Beretta 303 semi-auto, with 28" barrel with choke tubes. Bullet proof gun, gas operated platform that's light weight, that's under $1000. The old Browning B-80 was built by Beretta (Beretta 301 & 302 were the predecessors). Still popular in the sporting clay world, and the hunting game also. Personally, I never liked having only 2 shots bird hunting...if I was going to work that hard I wanted to kill 3 birds when they got up (especially wild pheasants). Doesn't happen hardly ever on pheasants in this state anymore, but if you get the chance with pheasants you want to be the HERO!

I have a couple of 870 20ga LW's and a 1100 20ga LW also. Great upland bird guns. One of my favorites was a 1100 sporting clay 28ga, that just killed everything! Pointed like a paintbrush! Only reason I sold it, was that the Feds were going to make steel shoot mandatory for Dove hunting, and I didn't want the bother trying to locate steel ammo. In hindsight, that rule only pertains to certain areas.

I have an early, steel receiver B-80
My all-time favorite auto loader.
Doubled on Huns first time I pulled the trigger on it (Fulton Canyon).

Have (2) of the same steel receiver B-80's, and (1) alloy receiver 2-3/4" B-80. The alloy receiver trippled on chukar's the first time ever fired, but I must admit the footing was on relative "flat" ground. It was during the early season opener we used to have in the Tarpiscan. My 1st gun purchase at 13yo, a 20ga 870 (mag) LW, did the same thing but the footing wasn't nearly as "flat" then, as I was on a steep talus slope during an early chukar opener.

We will be using these 2 Browning Superposed, one 12 and one 20...

Both were used hunting in Normandy during the war... About an hour and a half and we will be there, hunting in the morning...

Nice looking long tangs, but not sure which "War" you are refering to as Browning/FN didn't produce the 20ga Superposed until '49, I believe? My own 12ga Superposed (28" barrel choked Full/IC ..great rooster combo!!) was acquired by my Great Unc at the PX in Japan in '55..along with his (mine now) Mdl 70's.

That 20ga looks damn near new! I had the chance to purchase a late 50's 20ga Pigeon, LNIB when I was in college (1990) for $1500. While I had the cash, and I shot a limit of roosters the day I tried the gun out (3/3), I declined the offer. Obviously the cash was more important to me, and the ability to kill 3 birds with a gun (that held 3 shells) if the opportunity presented itself. I probably blew the $1500 down a shotgun barrel anyway, so I wish I'd of bought the 20ga!

Should be a nice day for chasin' pen birds, stop and shoot doves too.
