WDFW announces 62 days of tentative razor clam digs in 2021
Limit increased to 20 clams; all digs dependent on marine toxin results
OLYMPIA – Shellfish managers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) today announced 62 tentative dates for razor clam digs at beaches along the Washington coast beginning in mid-September and running through the end of the year.
Final approval of tentatively scheduled openings depends on results of marine toxin tests. Much of the 2020-21 razor clam season was impacted by high domoic acid levels, but this year’s season so far is looking good, both in terms of clam abundance and domoic acid, according Dan Ayres, coastal shellfish manager with WDFW.
“Similar to last year’s preseason indications, we’re estimating very strong razor clam populations at most coastal beaches,” Ayres said. “We’re optimistic that diggers will have plenty of great opportunities to dig for these clams this fall and winter.”
All open beaches (Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks, and Copalis) will also have increased limits through the end of 2021, with diggers allowed to keep 20 clams instead of the usual 15. Each digger’s clams must be kept in a separate container, and all diggers must keep the first 20 clams they dig.
“We’re confident that these beaches can support the increased harvest, at least through the end of the year,” Ayres said. “We’ll re-evaluate before announcing the 2022 digging dates to see if we need to adjust the limit.”
The Kalaloch beach will not open due to continuing issues with depressed populations of harvestable clams.
With COVID still impacting communities throughout Washington, officials are asking diggers to continue practicing social distancing, following local and state guidance on masks and face coverings, and being respectful of local communities and residents.
“We’re extremely grateful to everyone who helped this season come together, including local leaders, county health officers, and Washington State Parks,” said Larry Phillips, director of WDFW’s Coastal Region. “We’ll be working hard to help ensure a safe, productive digging season, and the public can do their part by following health and safety guidelines.”
Below are the tentative dates for this year’s razor clam digs, along with low tides and beaches. Most successful digging occurs between one and two hours before the listed time of low tide. All dates are tentative pending final marine toxin testing, which usually occurs about a week or less prior to each set of openings.

No digging is allowed before noon during digs when low tide occurs in the afternoon or evening.
All diggers age 15 or older must have an applicable fishing license to harvest razor clams on any beach.
Licenses, ranging from a three-day razor clam license to an annual combination fishing license, are available from WDFW’s licensing website at https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/login, and from hundreds of license vendors around the state. WDFW recommends buying your license before visiting coastal beach communities for this razor clam season.

Rivrguy, you beat me to the post by seconds.....lol

Really does make it nice to be able to mark a calendar with digging schedule until 12/31/21

And the increase limit, 20 clams, is awesome.....while not like 50+ years ago when I started digging BUT that said, there are probably 10 times the amount of people digging on most tides....

Amazing what can happen when a resource is left alone for awhile to rejuvenate. Why raise the limit? Isn't 15 big clams enough? Wonder what would happen if Salmon and Steelhead had a marine toxin that kept them off limits for a cycle?

Why raise the limit? Sells more licenses. Interesting question on limits. Especially while waterfowl hunting I really don't care about the limit. One or two is enough. Same when I was last salmon fishing. One was enough. On the other hand, a couple deer sure beats one.

Why raise the limit? I have a few ideas. First off this is not because of being off limits for a cycle. It was only one year. Remember last years populations were gangbusters, looks like natural mortality was low over the year. Long Beach would of likely had the same rules and number of days as what we are getting now.

The upcoming fall tides look largely to be in the dark digging. Most people like spring digging in daylight, so effort is limited in that regard. You will have a few "daylight" digs where the crowds will be big, but for most the weekday night tides, with that much opportunity to pick and choose, there won't be that many folks out. So given the large TAC it makes sense to raise the limit. It may get some folks to buy licenses, but it may cut down on trips also.

Regarding the low bar for management comment. Do you know there are only 2 coastal shellfish biologists in WDFW?

Contrast that with how may salmon biologists the pathetic Willapa Bay salmon fishery has. I think there are 4 or 5 working on that.

I know the following question has an answer, I can't find it...Clam License sales, I know there must be a breakdown

License sales.....Washington Resident

License sales.....Oregon

License sales.....all others

I still can't believe that Non-resident get such a break on the clam license....Resident $14.10 Non-resident $21.80, seems to me that double or even triple, the resident rate........should be the norm.

All I know are the amount of people moving thru Central Park on a good day light clam tide, seem to get larger every year...

Not many A.M. digs which is a bummer for those that are early morning peeps but at least it's something and a boosted limit.

More than 1 million razor clams dug during opening days of 2021-22 season
DAN HAMMOCKWed Sep 29th, 2021 6:28pmNEWS

A couple of stormy periods and digging in the dark didn’t keep effort and harvest down during the opening days of the 2021-22 razor clam season.

Harvest reports compiled by razor clam managers on Monday show more than 55,000 diggers took in excess of 1 million clams during the first nine days of the season.

”Overall, it was a successful opener with a lot of happy diggers,” said Dan Ayres, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife coastal shellfish manager.

“The only folks we found without the temporarily increased bag limit of 20 clams were those in locations (where) there are few clams, or on Sunday night with higher surf some diggers got wet and called it quits, and a few folks who said 20 was too many and they just took what they could eat.”

At Long Beach alone, which was open all nine days of the first dig Sept. 17-25, 22,044 diggers went home with 428,861 clams. That’s just shy of a full limit of 20, raised this year from the usual 15 because of limited digging last year and surveys ahead of the season showing more than ample numbers to allow for the extra harvest through at least the end of the year.

About 25% of the total harvest at Long Beach came on Sunday, Sept. 19, when more than 5,500 diggers took more than 111,000 clams.

Twin Harbors beach was also open all nine days, with 14,226 diggers collecting 263,377 clams, about 18.5 per digger over the course of the first nine days. It was close to limits the first six days of the dig, but success diminished as the tide moved into the plus region and the digs got later at night — Sunday, Sept. 25, with a .5-foot tide at 10:15 p.m., the largest number of diggers hit Twin Harbors and averaged just over 16 clams per for the night.

Copalis and Mocrocks beaches alternated days for the first string of digs this season, except Sunday, Sept. 26, when Copalis was added alongside Mocrocks. The 1,609 diggers that day on Copalis went home with limits. Overall, 10,193 diggers took 193,327 clams during the opening nine days at Copalis, and 9,256 took 160,896 clams at Mocrocks.

In the end, 55,719 razor clam diggers harvested 1,046,462 clams during the nine day dig.

Domoic acid kept digging to a minimum almost all of last season, but so far the numbers have been good. If they stay that way, there’s a lot more digging on the way.

“The next opener starts Oct. 3 with an early morning low tide,” said Ayres. “We expect to have the final (toxin test) results by Wednesday.”

If approved, the next nine days of razor clam tides will again have Long Beach and Twin Harbors open daily for digging, with Copalis and Mocrocks on alternating days.

Clammed a lot on daytime digs: never dug after dark. Looks like I'm going to get a chance to try some night time clamming. What lighting set up works adequately for digging in the dark? I've got a propane Coleman, but have a hard time keeping mantles functioning for more than a short time. Are the LED shop lights, rechargeable or battery operated, pretty commonly used? What are most clammers using for lighting on night digs these days? Thanks for any info.
