Unfortunately this does not bode well for Dungeness crab. Just a matter of time before it ruins what we currently have. Getting difficult to manage my disgust. https://www.thenewstribune.com/news/state/washington/article256140892.html

So, basically they set up a green crab hatchery. Stewarts of the environment? I think not. Think of all those miniscule green crab offspring floating out with the tide. All of Puget Sound is next. Already lots caught in Grey's Harbor, but nothing of this scale. Notice no criticism of this environmental nightmare caused by this tribe's operation.

The Lummi's caused the green crab infestation? fb No, of course they didn't. The green crabs infested their shellfish cultivation pond, which is connected to Lummi Bay. I caught a bunch of green crabs while crabbing in Tillamook last winter...tossed them all back the first day before I noticed that the regs required keeping them, and then never caught another one. Fish on... Todd

An article was in the local paper that volunteers were trying kill them in GH. A problem spreading all over it sounds like.

The Lummi's caused the green crab infestation? fb No, they just encouraged the invasive species to flourish in an artificial habitat. If this was a commercial operation run by non-tribal interests do you think the state would be so forgiving? Who remembers broken fish pens in Puget Sound?

The Green Crabs have been around for quite a while (at least decades) but seem to have always been found in low numbers, until this incident. One of two things. Perhaps PS and the Coast are relatively marginal habitat for them and they will only be a minor component, especially if we require killing any encountered. But, the conditions within the seasoned appear optimal so efforts need to made to control them strongly in artificial environments.

Out of all the crabbing I have participated in over the years in PS and the San Juans. I have never seen or caught a green crab. In the future if I ever catch one, it's either gettn smashed and thrown overboard or cooked up softshell style for a spider type sushi roll.
