Hey I have a question
What happens to the smolts in the hatchery when the hatchery meets its quota.

Any help would be great

If your question is what happens to the smolts that are left over after the states alloted amount are released, than I can give you an answer.

I asked this question at the Bogie rearing ponds this fall and the reply I got was....

We dig a big hole, put the excess smolts in and cover it up. This is what the state orders. If we try to release more than we are suposed to than we get fired.

Not the kinda of answer I was lookin for though.
I was kinda hopin that they put them in other streams that need rebuilding thats all

DWF,

As you might imagine, most hatchery personel don't like to bury any viable part of their production, and management really isn't too fond of it either. In some cases, excess production is released into lakes and reservoirs to supplement the stillwater fishery for resident fish. Even though burying excess production can make ecological sense, I've never known anyone who liked doing it.
