Hi everyone: The idea of a Pike Place Market protest has been milling around in several threads so I figured I'd start a new one. Here's the deal: I am willing to take part in a peaceful protest at Pike Place Market if a decent number of people will commit to it and help me coordinate it. If interested, tell me exactly when you can do it. It'll have to take place soon while there are still steelhead in the market. Also, everyone think about how to get the media involved. If anyone has any personal connections, let's use them. Please reply with your ideas on the forum (I check it daily) so we can all share them, and get in touch with me personally if necessary. My e-mail: flyfisher1066@hotmail.com Thanks to all who are willing to take part, it's something that must be done.

I am unavailable Saturday April 6 ( this Saturday) but am available Sunday. I can most likely make it for an hour or so for a lunch time weekday protest, which may be good as the Market is usually packed during midweek with all the pukers in town. Next weekend is Easter so that is probably out of the question unless I get divorced between now and then I think a weekday would be better, and we could probably get more people to come as they would only have to skip out on work for an hour or two and not skip out on a day of fishing. This might be better for media attention also, as more people watch the news on weekdays in the evenings. Either post here or email me with the day and time. [ 04-02-2001: Message edited by: Stadle ]

If we seriously plan out this protest and make it well-organized it can have an impact. I saw lets hold off on the protest and see if we can get a WSC sanctioned protest. With that, if will be much easier to get the media involded.
I also say that we put together a petition, like the wild steelhead release one that was going around a couple months back, that states that everyone who has signed that petition will boycott Pike Place Market untill they halt the sell of wild steelhead.
A well-organized protest will have a much greater impact then one thrown together at the last minute. Lets put some serious time into this and get it done!!
Feedback?

RPetzold, I am all for planning this out carefully. I will be at the WSC meeting on Thursday to make sure this issue comes up. The petition is a good idea, let's keep the ideas flowing and do this right everyone.

something to consider, go to the market order some salmon (with no intent to buy) after its wraped up, ask if thats wild steelhead there selling, after the reply of yes, tell them youve changed your mind, and don't want the salmon, if enough people get together and do this, (not knowing who is for real and wasting their time ) maybe they will get the message, did it once, but need more people to have any kind of impact just a thought

Way to get after it guys! I think you have a good take on the best way to go about it Ryan. Isn't the WSC meeting Wed. tomorrow night in Bothell? (at the American Legion Post at 7 pm). Keep us all informed so we can try to get big numbers of people involved.

I support the protest, but I still say you guys are missing the point. If you protest the PPM, you'll also have to protest some Safeway amrkets, and then go and protest restaurants like Hiram's and Palisade's, as I've heard all those places have wild steelhead for sale. It's like this: if you're having a picnic, and you've got an ant problem, do you try to kill each individual ant on the ground, or stop the problem where they come out of the anthole? Even if you protest at the PPM and get exposure and get the fishmongers there to stop selling these fish, the Natives, or the wholesalers that the Natives are selling to will find another market for these fish, and they will continue to be slaughtered. I'll reiterate what I said in another thread... the Natives are doing this for THE MONEY... you find a way to show them how to make more money by letting these fish live, (guiding, licensing guiding rights, etc.) and they will listen. Until then, the killing will continue.

Stormin'
It may just be a money thing these days but I think it takes a lot more skill and dedication to be a successful guide. I thought of that also but as I sit here and think about the guides I have been with. They are on the water working their butts off to get their clients into fish 6 or 7 days a week.
I think that is more effort than some tribal netters are willing to put forth.

Ryan, I would agree with making this a well organized protest and like your idea, I think maybe you should oranize it for us. What do you say??? But, with the seasons winding down we should consider getting this done asap ( which does not mean unorganized and just thrown together) or we may look really silly protesting the sale of wild steelhead that are not there. We don't want people to think steelhead fisherman are a bunch of DA's. [ 04-04-2001: Message edited by: Stadle ] [ 04-04-2001: Message edited by: Stadle ]

Flyfisher, I e-mailed the pike place market and got an interesting reply. It seems they are simpathetic to the sportsmen's concern over the sale of wild steelhead. the person I e-mailed was the person in charge of leasing of market space. He did give me the e-mail of someone more direct. It is andrew@pikeplacemarket.org. I think a large flow of mail might make them think about things a bit.

Craig, I posted these on another thread (I'll start a new one and put them on it), they are some contacts in addition to the one you have. I am anxious to hear more about that response. If you don't mind, would you mind posting your correspondence? I'm sure we would all like to see it. I haven't received any replies yet.
