that's the typical native attitude for you! I live in Canada we get a lot more of that than you do...beleive me! They poach freely, close roads, and claim land all the time!

I guess that means the people that want to fish will have to go to the upper river..
By closing the lake, I wonder how that will effect the local economy?..

The minimum escapement for sockeye in Lake Quinault is 26,500. If escapement predictions are below escapement the tribe has to make tough decisions. Last year and this year there is no sockeye fishing for the nets. No economy is hurt more then that in Taholah. The escapement for the last 2 years is just under. Poaching sockeye on Lake Quinault has been over-looked when the escapement levels are way above 26,500 but the run is very important to the tribe and all fish are needed to spawn.
If the nets had so much impact on the Chehalis steelhead this year why did the Wynoochee have a banner year?

Let me ask you this , you net the hump, why when the steelie return was under 800 fish, and they were netting 3 to 4 days a week, makes a lot of sence, but if the sockeye run is down, you close everything. Whats wrong with this picture, granet you stock the quanault well, and we pay to stock the hump, and you get majority of the fish. Something wrong with this picture. Salmon on the other picture I dont mind you netting a lesser percentage, but when they close the river for kings there should be no nets, because when there coming so are the silvers at the same time. the tribe and the state have got to get this problem under control. the little salm and cook creek have good returns, why not help rebuild the other grays harbor rivers, the hoquiam used to have pretty good runs as well as the wishkah , satsop not no more, but the nooch is holding its own for steelies, but not salmon. This whole situation is a joke.

this may not relate to the rivers around here, but i jus came from idaho (fished the clearwater for kings/bass) and there is a certain fishing hole that you can only perty much access by automobile, and the nez perce tribe who owns the land, shut it down, so thatno fishing can be done there, i have bought tribe fishing licenses before, but i will no longer support there stinky thinking..they are only in this for themselves...**berkley boy**

Anyone who spent much time around the nooch knew the fishing was good. 60 trailers on one day! Everyone I talked to did good. Take a float from Schaffer creek to Carter creek and you will see hundreds of flags in the river marking steelhead redds.
The Hump was open but when you see the Tribal catch, you will find out that very few fishermen participated...too slow
Why put effort into pumping smolts into a system when so many of the smolts croak when they get near the pulp mill??

Thats bull those tribs have been cleaned up for years, the only reason the nooch had all that traffic is its the only river in grays harbor with any amount of fish, so where does everybody go, if the the other rivers produce equil amounts, than all the traffic would be spread out, what a concept. I do okay in the nooch because I grew up there, but there are lots of people that dont, when I was a kid in the 70s the hump was the place to be, as well as the east fork of the Hoquiam. Dont go blaming it all on the pulp mill, thats just a cop out.

back to the main subject, the lake was closed to protect the returning adult sockeye from being caught in the lake by a few of the outlaws who ruined it for the rest of you. we also shut down the lower river for guiding and the net fishery so don't go thinking that we were just targeting you lake fishermen. you guys have to understand that this is a privilege and not a right to fish on our lake, we control when and when not people fish on the lake.

Here we go again the Nooch had a decent year yeh on hatchery fish, what happened to all the Nates that were headed that way, along with the Satsop fish. Oh ya $1.25 a lb thats what. I just love the double standards that the tribes seam to live by.They get to net fish we paid for? The Hump run was down [Bleeeeep!] Yes it was it's really down now Huh? but they sure got their fish...what few were there. what a freaking crock. Os

potter, are you saying you have fished the schaeffer to carter drift this year?the carter take out has been closed to the public for quite some time now.i personally made that drift 16 times this season.i was on that very same drift on 3/31/01.i saw flags but they were not from this years steelhead redds by no means, possibly salmon.i saw redds on several drifts but not in great numbers.the main reason the nooch gets the pressure is it's 90% marked fish, with this years low waters and the extended tribal netting not a lot of fish made it out alive.the impact will be noticed in future years.several local rivers had good numbers of fish but they were 90% native fish so they did'nt get pressured like the nooch.if its a waste of time to put smolts into a river with a pulp mill on it then the tribal officials sould recognize this as a problem and not net it so heavily, after all what happens when you take and don't give, you end up with nothing and thats the track were all gonna be on soon.why can't the tribes put the effort into the other rivers they net that they do in the lower quinault?it is the biggest put in take out river in the state and tribal members only get a shot at them. OS as for the absent of native fish in the nooch you certainly can't blame that on tribal netting, the river had plenty of marked fish in it to catch.the absence of native fish on the nooch is the result of years of broodstocking.you can't keep killing natives to make hatchery fish forever.the satsop will be the same way in the next 10 years, you can already see it starting, the reason is the marked fish get killed.if they didn't mark the fish and released them it would be a great program. scott
