I want to Thank Letty Potter for Giving me the contact to the fish Hatchery there and a special thanks to the Quinalts For being so generous and donating there surplus steelhead To area food banks and soup kitchens. I picked up about 30 steelhead today for the Bread and Roses Soup kitchen in Olympia wa. That serves two meals a day to the home less and less fortunate people in our community. My hat is off to them.

It often seems that the tribes get nothing but bad press from the Anglo-dominated fishing forums. Thank you superfly for posting one of the positives that they do.

The Quinalts do many positive things, Just look at there rivers and the fish returns they get.

Of all the tribes the Quinaults are the worse when it comes to other rivers...theres is great but rape the rest...sorry, I can't buy into the halo act.

That is a nice thing to do.

But if you want me to take off my hat, I would have to see tribal fisherman stop using the indiscriminate gill nets, and start implementing other means of collecting returning fish, such as fish wheels, or other proven technology.

I'm sorta with Gill on the issue of the halo act...Yeah, it's a nice gesture to share their bounty with those less fortunate, and it does create good press image.
HOWEVER.. even in the world of tribals, the quinault dont appear to have much of a conscience.
If they are truly so magnanimous and altruistic, why havent they released their claims of sovereignity over the Cowlitz tribal people and holdings. Could it be an issue of money?? Or is it power brokering?
Its way too early to get this spun up... I need to leave work and go fishing. So what's not blown out today?

I think it's pretty easy to separate methods of tribal fishing from how they dispose of excess hatchery steelhead.

I don't have to love everything that a particular tribe to respect donating fish to the food bank for people who may not be able to afford a warm meal, especially during the holidays.

Tribal netters blow

A magnanamous gesture on their part to be sure. But c'mon, netting the Chehalis, Hump, Queets etc... to death. It hardly makes up the difference.
