O.k guys this has nothing to do with the vision battle that has been going on since I have been gone so keep it out of this post please I am interested how many of you guys have actually straightened or broke an octopus or siawash hook fighting a steelhead or salmon?I do not want to know what brand at all! I personally have never done either This question comes from straightening my first two hooks on snags this week end and actually thinking that it was a good deal because I got my ltlcleo back.

In strict answer to your question. I have had an octopus hook break on me one time in 20+ years of salmon/steelhead fishing. I have never straighten one and I have never straightened or broke a siwash hook. I am convinced it was just a defective hook. It was on a pre-tied, store-bought mooching rig, tied up with 15 lb. test leader.
That was the last store-bought leader I ever used and I have never had any such trouble since that time.

No, I have never straightened or broken a hook on fish - when fishing properly.
I have bent out Gammy EWG's on fish. Not to the point of straightened, but pretty messed up. I'll probably give Owner a shot, as I'm starting to not like the EWG's.
I have had the honour to bust/straighten out a few hooks on fish, while doing stupid stuff, though. IE, using a ligh-wire jig hook for steelhead. Bad mistake.
Hooks, when used and fished properly, should not bend out or break on a fish.
Keyword being "properly". I think most people that have issues with hooks are doing whacky stuff. IE 80lb Power Pro while using a #4 hook.

Yep! Sure did! #2 red octopus. I did have only 12lb test stren offshore for main and 10lb max-perflexion for leader. I dont think it was a snag, it did move about the river (upstream too!) for about 10 minutes before my rig came back at me. It was a good size fish and the heavy water it got into. Bad hook? Sure! **** happens! Man, I've probably gone through few thousand hooks and yes, I have had a few bad ones too. ...anyway, the hook did strighten, I was trippin and *****en to my buddies who also had witnessed it, re-rigged and kept fishing.
Oh, by the way.... Yes, I,m fairly new here but with the "gang and pro-products" identified along with all the attacking and bithen, this is my last post and view on the board for I am not a local nor a good ol'boy or probably cool enough for some of the ego's I have found here. Man, you guys and girls ("the click") turned out to suck! I thought you and the board were pretty cool and informative at first but ****...I'm un-assing this PC and going fishing, roger-out.

I bent 1 side of a treble once in Port Angeles jiggin' for blackmouth. Turns out it wasn't the blackmouth that bent it, it was the 40 pound halibut that ate the jig! I've never broken a hook, but have seen some trebles get smashed over to one side by big chinook.
About 10 years ago I caught a 15+ pound coho up at Sekiu and lodged in it's mouth was a 5/0 siwash broken off at the top. Probably was crimped improperly.

Never broke a hook, but I did straighten one out. I was shad fishing just below Bonneville and hooks a king on a #4 shad dart. Got the fish to the bank, touched the line, and the jig fell out.

When guiding in the late 1980s I broke several Gammies. This was when they were new and had temper problems. I gave up on them for a few years but have finally gotten over being PO'ed. I have also bent a number of trebles, mainly #2 VMCs, mostly from horsing a big fish or when trying too hard to remove the hooks with pliers. But I was shocked this past winter to have an Owner jig hook totally self-destruct when setting the hook on a mid-size steelie in a tailout. Looked like spaghetti when it came back. Sadly the steelhead did not come back with the jig.
I guess any brand of hooks can occasionally have a bad one.

The only time I have ever straightened a hook on a fish was after I had cast the same spinner for three or four days in a row, bent all of the treble hooks back to relative straightness, and then of course hooked an extremely hot, large native steelhead in heavy water...
I have straightened the hooks on plugs several times while extracting them from snags, this is much more likely to happen as I tend to use a little heavier line when pulling plugs vs. tossing gear.
I have never bent a Siwash hook on a fish, even after rebending them. I have broken a few on snags here and there...
Other than my problems with the (censored) hooks I have only ever broken three hooks total out of thousands while closing the open eye...
Breaking/straightening hooks once attached to the lure has happened so infrequently to me that I really consider it a non-issue across all brands.

I have broken a few hooks on fish. All 1/0's tied to 15# leaders.

Actually, I've had lots of cheap hooks fail, when I'd bought a batch of them, the whole batch wound up thrown out. I really try to get rid of the junk, and when I pay liquidation $$ for surplus or discounted inventory, I generally expect to not be satisfied. Sort of an ethics issue. What gets me spun up is when I spend big$$ for flies and they're tied onto cheap hooks that fail when tieing onto the leader, before the first cast. It's happened, and I'm usually a long way from the truck and the rest of my inventory.
Recent history, though, I've had only one failure, and I still managed to boat the fish. A 12 +/- lb Coho pulled a 2/0 octopus hook nearly straight. Got rid of that rig, kept fishin. Caught lots more.. Really, simple as that. The hook??? Brand V... Talked to them about that issue, and trying to get more of another type, later. I dont understand all the "flaming" going on on this BB. They seemed ready to please, but when I contacted them I didnt go thru the door w/ an attitude, either. I could probably say more, but why??

I've bent many hooks.Mostly from wrapping the line around my arm and trying to break off a snag.I've bent my share horsing fish as well.I've never lost a fish that I could blame on the hook, though.Knock on wood!
I use #4's and #2's mainly, and small siwash hooks for size 1-3 spinners.6 to 12#leader.I guess I tie some pretty good knots ;)10 to 12lb Maxima can bend a lot of small hooks.
In my opinion,it's better for the hook to bend a little when you put too much pressure on it than to just break.I have yet to break a hook on a fish until after it's landed.
