Hey, I've gotten a couple of viruses sent to me via Bob TRBO's e-mail address. I have Norton software that is impregnable - still, it is annoying. Anyone else getting these? I don't know enough about how to trace the real culprit down, but maybe some of you professional geeks do.

Odds are good that this is something on one of Bob's machines, so he'll have to address the issue, if that is the case. You might send him a mail and let him know that it's happening, and which virus it was that you saw.

It's the Krev virus. I've received about 10 of them in my email. Luckily for me I use Yahoo web mail for my email addie that I use on the boards and they've been deleting the atttachments as they come in. They scan all attachments with Norton Anti-Virus before they're delivered.

As to how they're getting our addresses...well, I know that Jennie's board has been having the same problem so it could be an address harvestor of some type.

I have recieved many of those emails as well...I may be even sending them out because I d/l an attachement from a regular correspondant and in turn it was the virus.

Its likely the Klez.H variant....very nasty...it has antivirus retaliation capability...disables your antivirus software....also drops in a second virus Elkern too. Spent half a day getting a friends machine cleaned up.

Hey Spawnout ... sorry to hear that you're getting a mess of them, but it wasn't me, I promise wink

I just fired up the laptop for the first time since we left on Friday (we got to our Alaska abode today ... lots more about our trip tomorrow), but I checked my email at a Cybercafe in Whitehorse while we had a U-Joint replaced and I saw some of those (some were sent to "rlball" from "rlball" as well) ... I didn't get to check the headers until I got online with my machine tonight. I was wondering what they were considering my desktop is powered off and the laptop has been in its bag since Friday ... now we know frown It appears that they typically use a text excerpt from an HTML file in the internet cache (probably where the addy came from too) as the subject, but not always.

They're coming from an AOL address (I won't give it out here), but a few have "rlball" as the reply to name ... plus a mess of other names as well. My real emails have "Bob Ball-Piscatorial Pursuits Guides & Charters" as the sender / reply to contact ... a good tip-off if anyone else gets them.

I got about 60 copies of the virus in my box ... so consider yourself lucky DJ smile

A good reminder, update your virus definitions DAILY!!

Klez...yeah, that's the one. I think I have krev for dinner one night in SoCal. Wasn't quite cooked all the way through.

Bob: I figure at this point for all the times that I've mentioned getting antivirus software around here and keeping it up-to-date that anyone who gets infected with a virus now deserves it. Those of us who have to field the emails, however, don't.

Waiting until you get a virus to buy antivirus software is like buying the condom after the girl is already pregnant.

Hate to tell you this but nothing is impenetrable. There are a lot more people trying to create a new viruses than there are people making AV software. The best you can do is keep your AV SW up to date and NEVER OPEN AN EMAIL with attachments from people you don't know. Also, if you get an email from someone you do know with an attachment be very leery of it unless you know for sure it's safe. If you receive a .exe (BAD!!) delete it right away, .bat's I would suggest the delete button as well. Although file can be hidden in many different ways it's just best to delete without opening.

There are a lot of people that think because they have Norton, McAfee or Panda that they are safe and have nothing to worry about. Well, they are just looking for trouble.

I happen to be in a position where I have 113 different countries that comprise out intranet, I have to watch for Viruses and hackers trying everyday to cripple our NW. We keep our NW VERY secure, .exe are destroyed on our border and not let in. One last thing, using mail services such as hotmail or yahoo is the easiest way for a virus to get into your PC or NW.

Hope this helps. wink

Almost forgot. Here is a great site for all kinds of updates..

Hey Bob, no prob, I know you haven't been sending them! Likely just someone who glommed on to the board and is trying to do mischief. Be real nice to trace that AOL address if you can and report it.

I run a business over the internet and download lots of e-mail all the time, and ever since I got Norton, which updates every time I turn on my computer (I have DSL which is always on), nothing has bothered me - all my mail is scanned and anything dubious gets quarantined and regularly removed. And attachments don't download unless I tell them to, again anything I don't recognize I delete. Always seemed safe to me - curious why some of you guys think it's not.

I just put norton back on this box but I went all winter without a problem by simply not opening any thing that I was not completly sure of its origin. If every body would quit opening all the spam and B.S the problem would go away.

The thing about anti virus software is that it only catches virus' that are already identified. This means they have already caused problems somewhere and reported to Norton.

The last virus I got was from a friend that thinks it is necessary to put my address on forward so that there pc forwards all there b.s to mine. Then they wonder why I never return there emails.
