Yes, another newbie. Have been lurkin for a month or so...great info provided. Having said that, just bought a new Crestliner Sportsman 14' open aluminum V-hull. Need an outboard. Boat weighs 520#. Will be fishin either alone or with another for Puget Sound and straits blackmouth, coho, and chinook. Also, Lk Roosevelt and Rimrock kokanee/trout, Columbia R. and Lk Roosevelt walleye, among other destinations and finned foes. Anyone got any suggestions on make (leaning toward Honda and Yamaha 4 strokes cause dealers are local), horsepower (15?, 20?, 25? rated for 35). To keep things simple, tiller driven and manual start. I've searched the archive and don't find anything pertinent (although alot of great info). Any help would be mucho appreciated cool

Yessir. Really don't know how it got the moniker; could be the days of sun and lack of rain.

welcome aboard. i would go with a 35 horse, since i always like to get the most horse power possible. but a 20-35 should work fine. good luck.

My first three choices would be a
1. Yamaha 4 stroke
2. Yamaha 4 stroke
3. Yamaha 4 stroke

My boat is similar to yours,15' Smokercraft with a 25 Yamaha on the back. With my brother, myself and all our fishing gear,I can run at 28mph wide open and about 21mph at an nice cruise speed.

The Palm Springs of Wa.? Yea Right!!! laugh
We hunted elk over there last week and had lows at night down below zero three days in a row. BRRRRRRRR!!

I said sunny and dry. Oh, did I forget to mention cold in the winter and hot in the summer. I'm originally from the westside (spent 18 months in Forks in the 70's), and I love it here.

I had a Yamaha 15Hp 4 stroke on my 14' Northwood and it would run 25 MPH with just me in it.

Welcome Fodf ... Can't be of too much help with the newer motors, but I'd stay with no more than a 25 if you're sticking with the single motor and wish to troll.

I ran a 16' Sea-Nymph for years with a 25 and it plenty of go even with a load of crab pots and a couple of passengers but at idle (I know, not the best thing in the world for it), I could troll just fine in the Willamette and other places like the mouth of the Lewis (Vernita for you??).

I owned a '91 14 ft crestliner sportsman and started with a 15hp merc. That was OK but didn't get up and go with a couple of people. I replaced it with a 25hp merc after some A@#HO$% borrowed my motor in the middle of the night and never returned it. The 25 would get up and go faster then I cared to go and would still troll down slow enough for fishing salmon. Look at the weight in the back of the boat, I am pretty big and when I was alone in the boat with the motor and downriggers and all the other stuff I found I needed to keep some weight forward for a nice dry ride.

Thanx for all your input, guys. I went down today and ordered a 25 hp Honda (better deal than Yammi). Now to get some fish slime in the boat; looks way too new. Thanx again. fishy
