For chinook, I have been getting away from the shiney chrome look.

I have been using red hooks, or the dull grey (kind of galvanized) look of the VMC hooks.

I'm not positive it helps, but I'm pretty dern shure it don't hurt.

A buddy and I were fishing on a very popular walleye lake last year though the ice. He was using green gammi's tipped with a fathead minnow. I was getting outfished 3 to 1. I switched over to a green gammi, and it was a night and day difference between the green hooks, and the normal black hooks that I was using. Whether this ever happens again, I can't say for sure.

I fish a lot of yarn for steelies, and I prefer to use the red hooks. It gives me a little more confidence, and that's what it's all about. Good luck hello hello

It dosent make a bit of difference as far as im concerned. But since most people think that silver hooks are bad go ahead and dont use them so I can always get a good deal on em.

I don't really care about color,I buy whatever color the store has in the size I want. I've found that the red hooks are usually the most picked thru so I don't normally get red.

I use only the black for two reasons.
First is that they look better when fishing with nightcrawlers (summer runs lov'em)
Second, its the only color the sporting goods store I frequent carries in the Gami 100 pack.

Cerise to match the plug or jig. Buy silver and a couple of jars of lure coat your choice of color, dip and wham-o your own ccolor coordinated lure. laugh

I'm not sure about weather or not hook color matters but I do know . . . Clancy Holt changes hook colors with the water conditions. One of the very best steelheaders I ever knew - the guy was paid to catch steelhead by the B.C. govt. - fished big chrome hooks sizes 1 - 2/0 with a single Jensen egg, almost all the time. He felt that the hook was part of the attaction.

With the gear I use I think red looks best for steelhead, but I'll use a black or brown hook too. I don't like chrome hooks unless I'm fishing something with flash in it - chrome hooks look kind of funny in eggs. For saltwater fishing I use Mustad stainless hooks more for durability than anything else. And I always sharpen every hook I use anyway - they never come consistantly sharp enough from the box for me. Yep, even Gamis, Visions, Owners, you name it - I've found some that were duller than they should be rolleyes

I don't think it matters for drift gear. I tend to fish the silver plated hooks, but I've used them all and never been able to tell the difference. I just don't think steelhead and salmon are that selective.

For trout flies, I do vary the hook selection depending on the fly. For streamers that imitate baitfish, I want a nickel plated hook to add some flash.

There is a different factor that is important that is related. The nickel plated hooks are more resistant to rust and salt corrosion than the bronze and red hooks. So, if you're fishing in tidewater, nickel is a little better, IMO.
