Chuck,
Backer rod is used in concrete work, so try a contractor supply store.
Straws don't work, they split...what you want to use is fuel line material from remote control cars...get it at a hobby shop.
That being said, I find that at about $1 apiece, it's a lot less hassle to just buy 'em already put together.
However, that's just me! :p
If you decide to make them, good luck!
Fish on...
Todd.

Even better, just buy the Monster cheaters. practically indestructable and they require no extra weight to fish either eggs or jigs.

I'll disagree with the monster cheater for two primary reasons: 1) often a fish doesn't pull the bobber under, sometimes it just jiggles it, that's much easier to read with a dink or thill style float. West Coast floats are typically what I fish any more 2) fat ends of the cheater create drag on the water surafce when reeeling in, disturbing the surface more as well as just flat being tougher, especially when reeling against fast chop But to each his own!

Chukarnut:
Backer Rod....Is what's its called...can be found at the following places:
Ace Hardware, any glass shop, Home Depot/Base.....normally about $3.50 for 20-25 ft.
tubing----What I have used is anything from small straws, WD spray tubes, and what I use now........ small tubing for the oxygen machines that people have to use for home use.....I get mine from a friend who's wife has to use the oxygen pak, but I've sure you can buy that same material. What I like about it, is it a very soft material and won't cut the line.
---------------
1. I cut mine about 3-4 inches 2. take sand paper, take all the shine out the backer rod, so paint will stick to it. 3. Put your plastic sleeve in next. 4. 1 drop of super glue will hold them in place. 5. Paint 1/3 with a white undercoat paint, let dry. 6. Put coat of bright color.....Red, Green, Pink, let dry.
7. Put them in a pint size zip lock baggie
8. go fishing!!! They work very well....believe me, color the scare the fish!!!
love the "dink bobber/float" cause when they are rigged up correctly, its so easy to change the depth that you want the jig.
Hope this helps!!!!!!!!
