For those that like to fish puff balls ... I do wink

I've heard that the fellas that were putting them out are no longer doing so, and I'm seeing fewer and fewer of them around.

But there's hope! I know there's something called a "pill" out there ... not the old pill that was hard like corkies / cheaters, BUT there's a replacement for the puff ball on the market now called the Thunder Ball. I got a big sample pack in the mail the other day.

Looks the same, feels the same smile They seem to have a few more size options and more colors as well.

If your local retailer doesn't have them, ask them to order them from a company called Spar's Products out of Fair Oaks, CA .. the number is (916) 863-5866.

Thought some of you might like to know smile

Those are them smile

Untrue word re: their demise? Or an old site?

If someone opts to order some, be sure to let us know, I won't be needing much with the sample pack that I got from the "other guys" wink

Bob, I had heard the Puff Ball guys had a devastating fire that stopped their production, but that was some time ago - more than a year or two. Maybe some shops stopped carrying them after the supply disruption and didnt pick back up.

The ones you referenced were written up in the new products section of the last STS.

Thanks for the info John ... can't recall wehere I heard it recently, but I guess it's kinda along the lines of the Pro-Cure fire where I got loads of emails from people looking for Pro-Glow coloring from our egg recipe page and having retailiers tell them that Pro-Glow (Beau-Mac) had burned down and would no longer be available ... even though it was a whole different company smile

Didn't see the STS write-up ... maybe I should buy more than one every few years!

Can I ask how you guys rig these. I've had some for a year or more, tried them a few times simply threaded on the leader above a bare hook, figuring they would hold scent well. Pale pinks ones from a craft store.

We fish them directly on the hook.. slip them through the point and to the bend in the hook, a small gob of eggs in the egg loop and you are fishing southern OR style! flor. red is my favorite! they float really high and SC steelies seem to love them.

And he let me know it dobberbown smile

Here's a portion of the email:

Quote:
Hi Bob,
This is my first time visiting your website, I am very impressed with the information available and how easy it is to find good information. This is by far the best fishing site I have ever seen.
Just read you post on Puff Balls and would like to bring you up to speed on what's going on. As you may know puff balls were very hard to come by last year due to a couple of issues. No we didn't burn down or have a major disaster.
First, the demand got so high we couldn't keep up and retain the quality we desired. Second, the paints we used didn't contain the Fluorescents and Pearl base I thought was necessary for the colors to change in different light and depth of water. I spent 11 months working with many paint manufactures to come up with the exact color desired, you can put one of our packages up to a light, then turn it slightly and see the colors change, that's what it does under water. This paint is only available on the our puff balls. These paints are non-toxic and lead free.
We have expanded our manufacturing process to meet all demands and for those who like to order on line they can visit our new website at www.puffballs.net . We also have a Guide program for full time professional guides. Interested guides can contact me a riverswest@charter.net or by phone at 707-482-5822, remember I am a guide also so I usually call back in the evenings.
Jan 2003 we will be introducing two new colors, one of which has been designed especially for the far west Steelhead.
Rest is secret guide stuff :p

If you haven't given them a try, you might wink

Looks like Im guilty too of mis-attributing the fire to Rivers West. I apologize for the mistake.

These guys make great product and puff balls should be a part of everyone's repetoire. They are definately fish catchers!

ps I like the pink and green ones in addition to the standard orange.
