I'd buy a new one. I've heard that 1500hrs is the point where most outboards are finished. My brother bought a 30hp demo-model Yamaha over the summer. It had 5 hrs on it,with full factory warranty for $2300. A brand new one is more, but $1900 will put a good dent in the new motors cost.

Wow! For that much money I would try giving it a tune up first. New plugs, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, and gear oil. Then, if it is still running crappy you may just want to buy a new one.

What did they say was exactly wrong with it? the reason i ask my neighbor has a 9.9 thats got some years it started running bad, hard starting running rough and then finally wouldn't stare, come to find out all it was, was the kill switch harness was shorting out, the crank shaft bearings are probably bad? and they are probably good to have them pin it down, there not a whole lot that go wrong with those motors, just my .02 worth Doug

Have you looked at "newer" used motors? $2K should get you a long way towards something newer.
If you do have some work done on it, I would skip the rebuild and have them do the carb work and possibly clean out he carbon. When I rebuilt the carb on my Yamaha kicker the before and after difference was night and day. According to my mechanic the most common problem with the Yamahas is fouled carberators due to the pinhole sized orifices inside. JMS
