I just picked up a couple of halibut poles with longbeach 65 reels used for $50 for the pair. The line on them needs to be replaced one has mono and the other has a braided line of some sort. My question is what type of line should I put on the reels. I will be fishing 150 - 600 feet deep so mono is out of the question to much stretch. I looked the new stuff out their but it is expensive for a small spool. Do you put a backing on the new lines . What do all you guys use out their. I have halibut fished before but was on a guided trip and they supplied all the stuff. I am headed to port hardy for a week this summer and want to try a little halibut fishing along with the salmon fishing.

Dacron has been my choice for an inexpensive halibut/deep sea line. Works great up to 250-300 feet deep. Never tried the new braided lines, but I bet they are the cats meow when going deep, as the diameter is so much smaller.

You got a good deal on the rods and reels. Nice job.

I agree with the others about the tuff line being the way to go but I personally have never had the need to go heavier than 50# and most of my rigs have 30#s and they do just fine. Get yourself a good pair of gloves for handling the line when it's under tension(snagged on bottom) It'll cut thru bare hands like like a knife thru butter. Good luck up there! smile

80lb Power Pro would be my choice. Get the reel backed up with 50 or 80 lb dacron and then get about 200 yards of the power pro. Adding the backing will allow you to save some money on the expensive stuff. 200yrds is about all you wouuld ever need for line and it would cost somewhere in the range of 26 bucks. I would prefer the 80lb line because sometimes you may need to fish upwards of 2-3 lbs of lead.
Hope this helps!!

Troller I have 60lb Powerpro its the cats meow. I can fish 475ft deep with 11/2lbs of lead in a good current and still have a good line angle.I would not go any heavyer than 60lb cause you would have to tye it to a cleat then start the boat to break it off if you get hung on the bottom!! beer

Tuffline, 35-50 lb, backing optional. The thin lines are the only way to go IMO. Fish almost flat down to 300 feet with 1 1/2 lb ball. Gotta love those halibut! laugh

I use 50 and 80# Tuff Line on Shimano TLD25 reels...the smaller the diameter the better for access to the bottom with less line off the reel. The newer lines have a real tiny diameter and definitely make a big difference. As the current picks up it is easy to see the angle difference on the rod with the tiny diameter line vs the older thicker dacrons .

Make sure your line is the thin stuff. They sell both fat and thin. When fishing 450-650 feet deep you will need 3-4 lbs of lead with any current. The fat 80 lb has too much drag. Spend the extra money the first time or you will be buying it later anyway. It makes that big of a difference. At the cost of a BC trip, don't scrimp here. Don't take the wearing gloves lightly with thin line. Deep cuts heal really slowly in saltwater while fishing the rest of your trip in pain.
