I heard talk that the de-icer is hard on aluminum. I heard that it discolors and can eat into the aluminum. Anyone else here or know about this. I hope it is a bad rumor.

Buddy of mine goes over the pass every weekend. He had to have his new alloys replaced due to pitting. The new ones are only one month old and they are already starting to pit up.

Tire store says it's due to the traction spray that DOT is using.

Gonna wash my boat after every use cause they are using it down here on the flatlands too.

Troller, I brought my Alumaweld home from the Cowlitz last month ( over white pass)
and didn't wash right away... like I usually do.....but just put it in the garage.

Well I took it out, 2 weeks later to clean it up to take to the paint shop (repainting inside and out) and on the bottom unpainted half of hull (polished aluminum) where 1/4" white circles with a tiny pit in center...tried rubbing them off...no way...took to carwash...couldn't scrub off...took Mother's aluminum polish and a lot of eblow grease to buff them off.

So as soon as you get home .... off the roads sprayed with deicer...take to coin op car wash
and you won't have any problems.
I've been towing aluminum boats over the passes in the winter for 20 years and this is the only time this happened.

The agent being used is called magnesium chloride, it is extreamly corrosive to aluminum. now if our hyway dept would just wise up.

Nope they do not make sleds but wouldn't the de-icer also be bad for an aluminum drift boat. That's all I was getting at.
