I have just started to tinker with making my own jigs. and now I'm trying to catch fish with them, a whole nother story.

I hope I can keep this short...Here is the basic list that I think you'll need, anyone out there see something I'm missing please add on.

Jig heads w/hook (various colors and sizes/weights)

Marabou and Flashabou, rabbit fur, the choices are almost endless

Fly tying vise with the spindles/scissors and what not that come with most beginner sets.

The stretchy fly tying thread.

Head cement. Large size needle.

With my set I bought it came with a book that shows a couple basic knots that you'll need to keep it together.

Place the hook in the vise and get your thread on the holder and start layin down the marabou and tying to secure it in place. When your happy with the look, use some head cement dribbled down a large needle onto the thread to finish it off.

Those are the basics and there are a lot of unique things you can do with those materials.

Checking out the instruction book saved me a lot of time and the 3rd or so jig I made was useable laugh

I got all my stuff and some great help at Ted's in Lynnwood.

cool

for the most part. stick to three colors: pink white and black. increease the amount of what ever color needed for the season and conditions. ex: mainly pink and white w/ justa lil black for winter. and mainly black with a lil pink or white in summer. dont tie jigs with alot of material hanging more that one pinky finger thickness past the rounded end of the hook to eliminate non-hookups. go to kaufmans or another high quality fly store and get tiemco hooks (700 seires) you will never lose a fish to a straightened jig on these. these require using lead eyes instead of a typical jig head but they work just as well and often times better in heavilly fished areas. The very best color for winter fish is the light pink marabou. never add sent directly to marabou. only to the body of the jig or you will ruin the action of the marabou. the number one rule is keep it simple. if its in the water and its a biter then it will bite your toe if you present it right. gomakatsu makes a good jig head but dont buy oregon takle heads unless you want to watch every big fish swim off after straightening your hook. to start off do a pink body with lightly wrapped white new age chenile (chrystal flash) (like a wolly bugger wrap) then just behind the head tie these off but leave your body chenile. tie in light pink marabou just behind the head. it does not need to be palmered. then make a couple more wraps to finish with the pink body chenile to make the head look clean and tie it off. it wil work. go very dark in the summer. a pink butt and black body with black and purple marabou will absolutely kill em. email me if ya have more questions. tight lines

Keep it simple! Get your self a couple of colors of medium chenile. Flo red (cerise) Flo pink, shell pink ( peach colered). Get Black glo bug yarn and white ( for the tails). Next get some jig head on some decnt hooks. I use eagleclaw oshaugnesy style. Size 4 and 2. You can use different brands, but they cost twice as much and don't work any better. You can go to Sportco fro jig paint. I only use 2 colors for the heads. Pearl white and pearl pink. Or you can order from places like Cableas for that also. I do ge tmy hooks from there. I have gotten most of my chenile fro Gi Joes in lakewood, they have a pretty good selection. Or I have gon to stream side anglers in Tumwater. If they don't have it they can get it for you. Other than that the tying part is pretty easy. You can e-mail me if you have any questions.
