When using Diver and Bait in Rivers such as the Cowlitz, how long should my leader be? What size hook? Thanks

Try running about five feet of leader ... hook size will vary on your terminal rigging, but I'll usually run twin 1/0's for WA springers (we usually run 8 to 10 lb. test in the clear waters of the coastal streams).

When I am running divers on the Cowlitz for Springer's, I am usually fishing with hearing, I usually use a double hook rig. Top hook is usually a 3/0 and tail hook is a 2/0 (a lot depends on the size of hearing that you are using). Use either a clear diver, or paint them all black. Why? Because many times the fish will hit the driver, and not your bait.

If I am using hearing, I like about a 5 ½ foot leader. If I am using shrimp and eggs, I usually make it a little shorter. I normally only use a single 3/0 hook if I am using the shrimp and egg combo because I use a threader for my shrimp. Don't be afraid to experiment, because it may vary depending on the color, height and fishing pressure.
As far as the diver size; I have not had to by any new ones for years, but the old size that I have used forever was 000! I hope this helps you catch a Springer.

Good luck,

Is the taste of the bait worth the sting of the hook????

Thanks for the info, went to the Cowlitz yesterday and managed to hook into three springers using diver and eggs with shrimp. Did not manage to land one though, but thats the way fishing goes.
